One Piece (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation that premiered on Fuji TV in October 1999. It is based on Eiichiro Oda's manga series of the same name. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his crew, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world's ultimate treasure known as the "One Piece" in order to become the next Pirate King.
In 2022, One Piece was the most watched TV show of the year in the world, beating Stranger Things[45] and Monkey D. Luffy was ranked as top three world's most popular character according to TV Time, a popular tracking service. It is also the most selled manga in the world even passing the batman comics.
The nickname "The Big Three" came about due to their immense worldwide popularity and length. With that, they were always featured in front of the shared Shonen Jump covers and always had bigger images for their main protagonists: Luffy, Naruto and Ichigo. All three series ran for at least 15 years and 70 volumes, and all three overlapped in publication from 2001-2014. One piece is the longest anime in the big three with 1092 episodes as of febuary 7th 2023 and is in the top 10 longest animes of all time.
